media-bigotry-sharpton-deen_BREITBARTNote: To avoid any confusion, let me say up front I’m not calling for anyone to be fired. Like calling for boycotts, anything involving joining, or saving the environment — calling for people to be fired is something I don’t do.

From what I understand of the situation involving disgraced cooking queen Paula Deen, after being robbed three decades ago, she privately used the N-word. Deen has admitted to this. In depositions, she also admitted to telling jokes about gays, blacks, Jews, and “rednecks.” Everything else is hearsay involving a lawsuit and media interpretations of what is being said in the actual depositions.

So what we know is that during or after a robbery in the mid-eighties Deen said the N-word, that she tells jokes about everyone (including her own people: “rednecks”), and that the consequence of this involved two weeks of a full-blown media pile-on that resulted in her being fired by the Food Network and losing top sponsors.

Sarah Palin has kissed and made up with FOX News Channel.

The former Alaska governor and vice presidential candidate has re-joined the channel as a contributor, after famously parting ways with the network in January.

Palin will appear on the network’s daytime and primetime programming, beginning with an appearance on Monday’s “FOX & Friends.” She will also contribute to FOX Business Network.

FOX News Channel chairman and CEO Roger Ailes said that Palin came back aboard after “several conversations” between the pair, adding, “I hope she continues to speak her mind.”

“I’ve had several conversations with Governor Palin in the past few weeks about her rejoining FOX News as a contributor,” Ailes said. “I have great confidence in her and am pleased that she will once again add her commentary to our programming. I hope she continues to speak her mind.”

Palin, whose original run as a FOX News contributor lasted from January 2010 to January 2013, called her once-again workplace an “indispensable” news outlet with “unparalleled” power.

Another Oscar Night Wasted

Ben Stein’s Diary

Maybe Seth McFarlane should be footman to Mrs. Obama, our own Evita.

muchell-o-scarsSunday
I am not quite sure who Seth McFarlane is, but he must be important, because he was the host of the Oscars show last night. He managed to be the most offensive host I have ever seen on an awards show. He looks sane, but there is something wrong with him, or maybe it’s that the producers asked the writers to be really offensive, and the writers produced offensive material, and Seth McFarlane just blithely read it.

But herewith some of his bons mots:

He mentioned various actors who had played Abraham Lincoln — Raymond Massey, Daniel Day-Lewis — and then he added, “But the only actor who ever really got inside the brain of Lincoln was John Wilkes Booth.”

What the hell was that? A sick, evil joke about the murder of Abraham Lincoln on a network TV show? We have really gone way down into the toilet bowl of humor.

Roughly at the same time, the host said that some charity for college students at the Motion Picture Academy was a great idea: drunk producers and “college co-eds.” I thought we didn’t say “co-eds” any longer because it insults women.

But then the charming host brought out an actress who played a vicious alcoholic and said that was what he aspired to be. What? Do the writers think alcoholism is funny?

Then the host introduced some performers and said they were being brought out in case anyone didn’t think the show was “gay enough” already. I had no idea that Richard Gere, Queen Latifah, Renee Zellweger, and Catherine Zeta-Jones, the actors Mr. McFarlane introduced were gay, but if they are, I am not sure it’s Mr McFarlane’s duty to mock them and “out” them on national TV. If they are not gay, then why call them gay?

But the ultimate was the end of the show, in which Mrs. Obama, live from the White House, wearing what looked like a large roll of aluminum foil, stood with a bunch of military aides in dress uniforms announcing Best Picture. I always like to see the military honored — and rightly so. But the sight of so much military around the First Lady, who holds no official post, smacks of Evita Peron.

However, Mrs. Obama, who apparently never had a happy day until her husband ran for President, was obviously enjoying herself immensely, so, it’s all fine. It does make clear, though, that even being President is a step or two under being a big power in Hollywood. What do First Ladies aspire to? Why, Hollywood, of course. My wife tells me Mrs. Obama was on a show on Saturday doing some kind of dance. She said she was not impressed.

Well, my own idiot fault for watching the Oscars in the first place . It’s never good. Too much ego in one room. Tonight, the Obama ego and the Hollywood ego. I thought my TV would melt. And what’s all this whining about the sequester and people being laid off? Let them eat red carpet.

Meanwhile, let me tell you something. As any reader of my little column knows, our son has been a major challenge to me over the past 25 years. He’s handsome and smart, but he’s also incredibly difficult to wake up for school, sarcastic, thinks he knows it all, and orders way too much food at restaurants and that’s just the tiniest start.

But do you know, he and his staggeringly beautiful wife and their daughter, Coco, and their dog, Buglet, left to move to the world’s most charming town, Greenville, South Carolina, yesterday, and I can hardly stand it. He’s not going to be walking in the door at midnight asking for money. He’s not going to be showing up at 7 a.m. wanting me to take him to the car dealer. He’s not going to need me to referee fights between him and his wife. He’s gone. When I asked him how long he thought he would be gone, he said straightforwardly, “For good.” I thought I would pass out.

And I cannot look at a picture of him now without tears coming to my eyes.

“Empty nesters.” Now, there is a sad phrase.

Michael Douglas Will Play Ronald Reagan in an Upcoming Film About the Reykjavik Summit

The world discovered last year that Michael Douglas (of “Wall Street” and “Basic Instinct” fame) was in talks to play Ronald Reagan in an upcoming film about the 1986 Reykjavik summit.

And according to U.S. News & World Report contributing editor Peter Roff, this is simply more evidence that Hollywood “hates Reagan.”

TV Guide Hails Martha Raddatz as ‘Moderator of the Year,’ Slams Clint Eastwood, Bristol Palin

TV Guide published a “Cheers and Jeers” issue to analyze “2012’s Best and Worst in TV.” When it came to political TV, the magazine made it quite clear that Obama’s re-election was a highlight, and conservative celebrities were only mentioned in “Jeers.”

Raddatz was hailed for “asking direct questions and keeping the candidates on point,” which does not describe her first question to Joe Biden on Benghazi. She noted the State Department now admitted there were no protests, but could ask Biden if the Benghazi attack was a “massive intelligence failure,” not a massive campaign of misleading the American people:

martha-raddatzCHEERS to ABC News’ [sic] Martha Raddatz for being moderator of the year. She took control of the vice-presidential debate with blunt forcefulness, asking direct questions and keeping the candidates on point, a marked contrast to Jim Lehrer’s passive style in the first presidential matchup. Can she do all the debates from now on?

The magazine sort of ruined that pro-substance argument by awarding “Jeers” to the “Today show train wreck” for letting go of Ann Curry, the woman who couldn’t locate Illinois on a map.

Clint Eastwood’s speech at the Republican convention – where someone thought his star power would eclipse the eloquence of his presentation – drew only jeers:

JEERS to the Eastwoods for not knowing when to stay off camera. Clint’s embarrassing and rambling diatribe to an empty chair at the Republican National Convention raised eyebrows, while wife Dina’s narcissistic celeb-reality show Mrs. Eastwood & Company provoked only yawns.

Published December 12, 2012

NEW YORK – It’s been a bad week for A&E.

PawnStars_YouTubeFirst, Dave Hester sued the network, claiming “Storage Wars” was staged. Now the network’s History Channel division has its own lawsuit brewing over its hit show “Pawn Stars.”

A talent agency has filed a lawsuit against The History Channel, TMZ reported, claiming they signed on to represent the cast of “Pawn Stars” back in 2007 and 2009 and were terminated after the show hit the air.

The agency, Venture IAB, claims they were representing Corey Harrison, Rick Harrison, Richard Harrison and Austin “Chumlee” Russell before the stars made it big. The agency alleges six months after the show hit the air, two “Pawn Star” executives convinced the cast to end their deal with Venture.

According to court documents, posted on The Hollywood Reporter’s website, History Channel Vice President Mary Donahue and General Manager Nancy Dubuc “intentionally interfered with the Agency Agreements by inducing the Harrisons, Golden State Pawn Stars, and Russell to terminate the [Venture IAB] agreement.”

This resulted in the loss of millions of dollars in income, the talent agency claims.

Ghosts, Vampires, and $5 Million Gas? Ridiculous Lawsuits Abound

In advance of the U.S. Chamber Institute for Legal Reform’s annual summit, we’re taking a look back at some of the most ridiculous lawsuits of the year.

Haunted by Frivolity
It’s that time of year. The leaves are falling, nights are getting cooler, ghosts are forcing tenants out of rental agreements. A Toms River, NJ couple claims their rental house is haunted, and they’re suing their landlord for the security deposit. The landlord thinks that the couple was spooked by the rental fee and an other-worldly desire to break their lease.

The Price of Gas Really Is Skyrocketing!
Victoria Jean Church-Dellinger of White Lake, MI defaulted on lease payments for her 2008 Pontiac G6. The lender then repossessed her car. Simple enough? Not quite. The car still had half a tank of gas in it and her lost personal property—eight gallons of gas—is part of a class action lawsuit for $5 million. That’s quite a bit pricier than today’s $3.73 a gallon average.

From the Baseball Diamond, a Real Gem
Two years ago, eleven-year-old catcher Matthew Migliaccio’s errant throw teed off a spectator who was struck in the head. Elizabeth Lloyd, who said she was not hurt when asked, threw the Little Leaguer a real curveball when she sued him for more than $150,000 in damages and an undefined amount in pain and suffering. The swing-for-the-fences suit hasn’t been resolved.

This Lawsuit Has Teeth
Freedom of religion is one of America’s founding principles, but when you’re a vampire serving a life sentence in Texas, there are limits. Inmate Courtney Royal requested religious items, a spirit advisor, and a black Bible, among other things he requires to perform vampiric rituals for his practices of “West African Spiritualism and 18th Century Catholicism.” The self-proclaimed “Vampsh Black Sheep League of Doom Gardamun Family Circle Master Vampire High Priest” lost his civil rights suit after two years in the courts.

Cheaters Never Prosper, But They May Profit
What would you do if your child cheated on a test? While most parents would opt for some kind of punishment, Jack Berghouse and his wife chose to sue the school district when their son was caught copying another student’s homework. The couple alleges their son’s due process rights were violated and that the school’s punishment for cheating is vague and contradictory. It’s important to know who to blame.

THE STAR TREATMENT

August 20, 2012 by Joe Kovacs

He ‘hates farming, hates the military, hates the U.S. and we hate him!’

Country-music legend Hank Williams Jr. unleashed another round of less-than-flattering words for Barack Obama, this time Friday night at the Iowa State Fair.

According to the Des Moines Register, after Williams performed the song “We Don’t Apologize For America” a chant of “USA, USA” broke out among the crowd.

The singer responded with a smile, telling the audience he was their mouthpiece and added:

“We’ve got a Muslim president who hates farming, hates the military, hates the U.S. and we hate him!”

The crowd apparently loved what it heard, responding with “loud and enthusiastic” cheers.

The Register says when reached for comment Saturday, Brad Anderson with the Obama campaign in Iowa said, “That type of absurd nonsense doesn’t really deserve a response.”

In July, Williams Jr. told Rolling Stone magazine Obama “hates America in the first place, forget about the flag.”

Last October, the music legend received massive publicity when he appeared on “Fox & Friends” and blasted a golf game between Obama and House Speaker John Boehner.

June 12, 2012 – Written by Ed Driscoll

While some would argue that it was Marlon Brando who created the notion of “cool” in the 1950s, back in the 1990s, the late Michael Kelly wrote that in his opinion it was Frank Sinatra who defined the term in that mid-century decade — and it was very much a mixed blessing, as Kelly wrote:

The new cool man that Sinatra defined was a very different creature. Cool said the old values were for suckers. Cool was looking out for number one always. Cool didn’t get mad; it got even. Cool didn’t go to war: Saps went to war, and anyway, cool had no beliefs it was willing to die for. Cool never, ever, got in a fight it might lose; cool had friends who could take care of that sort of thing. Cool was a cad and boastful about it; in cool’s philosophy, the lady was always a tramp, and to be treated accordingly. Cool was not on the side of the law; cool made its own laws. Cool was not knowing but still essentially idealistic; cool was nihilistic. Cool was not virtuous; it reveled in vice. Before cool, being good was still hip; after cool, only being bad was.

If you love listening to Glenn Beck on the radio, and many, many millions of you do, you will get to do so for years to come.

The news about Beck’s radio show hit the New York Times Sunday evening:

His company, Mercury Radio Arts, will announce on Monday that it has renewed its contract with Premiere Networks, keeping “The Glenn Beck Program” in syndication for five more years.

Mr. Beck’s show entered national syndication via Premiere, a unit of Clear Channel, 10 years ago. Now carried by more than 400 stations, the show typically ranks No. 3 among all news-talk radio shows.

The Times quotes Premiere Radio’s president Julie Talbott calling Beck one in a “handful of superstar talents.”  Beck praised Premiere as a “true partner in every sense of the word.”  The report put the value of Beck’s prior contract in 2007 at $10 million a year:

Premiere and Mercury Radio Arts declined to comment on the value of the new one, but a person with direct knowledge of the deal said it would pay Mr. Beck $100 million over the course of the contract.
